Am-241 informations

General Info

Am-241 is one of isotopes of americium. There are 95 protons and 146 neutrons in Am-241 nucleon. The Half-life is 432.6 years. It decays to Np-237 and energetic alpha about 5.5 MeV with nearly 100% branch ratio or fission to other smaller elements spontaniously with $3.6(9) \times10^{-10}%$ branch ratio. It is synthetic because the generating possibility is extremely low in nature. The excited Np-237 resulted from alpha decay emit energetic gamma rays from $13\mathrm{keV}$ to $1015\mathrm{keV}$. The details are in Decay radiation section. The spin parity of Am-241 is 5/2-. The magnetic dipole moment($\mathrm{\mu}$) is $1.58(1) \mathrm{\mu_N}$, electric quadrapole moment($\mathrm{Q}$) is $4.34(5) \mathrm{barn}$ and charge radius($\mathrm{R}$) is $5.8928(42)\mathrm{fm}$. The separation energy of neutron($\mathrm{S_n}$) and proton($\mathrm{S_p}$) is $6.647(14)\mathrm{MeV}$ and $4.47995(17)\mathrm{MeV}$. Binding energy per nucleon is $7.543279(5)\mathrm{MeV}$ and atomic mass is $241056827.3(12)\mathrm{AMU}$, so mass excess is $52934.3\mathrm{keV}$.

Source specifications

Am-241 radioactive source used in this experiment was produced by Eckert & Ziegler company. The source activity 4.174 kBq in 2020, thus now the activity becomes about 4.15kBq. The geometry of case of radioactive source follows A2 capsule type in AF alpha particle standard. Am-241 is electroplated onto mirror finish platinum surface foil by diffusion-bonding. The foil is fixed in an cylindrical aluminium holder. The diameter and height of this aluminium holder is $12.7\mathrm{mm}$ and $6.35\mathrm{mm}$ each. The active diameter of source is $5\mathrm{mm}$. The FWHM(Full Width at Half Maximum) value is less then 20keV. A tolerance of this source is 30% with nominal activity.
